BRISCOE WINS SEASON FINALE IN AUSTRALIA

admin | 28 October, 2008 09:04

Ryan Briscoe became the first Australian driver to win his "home" race when he steered his Team Penske entry under the checkered flag to win the Nikon Indy 300 on the streets of Surfers Paradise Sunday.

Scott Dixon, the 2008 IndyCar champion, was second in the non-points race, followed in third by Ryan Hunter-Reay. Alex Tagliani and Oriol Servia rounded out the top five.

Briscoe led three times for a total of 39 laps of the 60-lap event. Dario Franchitti led for two laps and finished 16th in his return to the open-wheel wars with Target Chip Ganassi Racing.

"Despite the fact there are no points involved, this is a very special win," said Briscoe. "It's not often I have had the opportunity to race in my home country, and it means a lot to win in front of my family and friends."

Next up for the IndyCar Series is the 2009 season! It starts with the April 4 race at St. Petersburg, followed by the Big One....the 35th Annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, April 16-19.
