HELIO WINS RACE, DIXON WINS CROWN

admin | 09 September, 2008 07:02

Just 12-1/8 inches.

That was the miniscule margin of victory last weekend in the PEAK Antifreeeze & Motor Oil Indy 300 at Chicagoland Speedway. And for race winner Helio Castroneves, it's gotta rank as one of his most outstanding efforts behind the wheel.

Castroneves started dead last -- 28th on the grid -- because of a qualification infraction, then steadily worked his way back through the field to nip Scott Dixon at the finish line by 0.0033-seconds, the second-closest finish in series history. It was also the furthest-back anyone has come for an IndyCar win since 1946.

Ryan Briscoe finished fourth, followed by Tony Kanaan and Will Power.

Unfortunately for Helio, it wasn't enough to keep Dixon from winning the 2008 IndyCar Series championship -- his second title --- by 17 points, good enough for a cool $1 million bonus.

The series now takes a month off before running the inaugural Nikon Indy 300 at Gold Coast Australia. The Sun., Oct. 26 race will be televised at 10:30 p.m. E..T. on ESPN Classic.
