Helio Castroneves had the lead for most of the Detroit Indy Grand Prix on Belle Isle...until he was socked with a penalty for blatantly blocking Justin Wilson. And, it cost him the win.
Castroneves was forced to relinquish the lead to Wilson with less than 20 laps to go after, in the words of Brian Barnhart, IndyCar president of competition/operations, "Helio crossed over almost the entire width of the track to impede Wilson's progress. It was a pretty easy call."
The win was Wilson's first in IndyCars after his outstanding Champ Car career. Tony Kanaan was third, followed by Oriol Servia and current points leader Scott Dixon.
Dixon has a 60-point bulge over Castroneves as they head for the season finale, the PEAK Antifreeze and Motor Oil Indy 300 at Chicagoland Speedway. If Dixon finishes 8th or better, he takes home his second IndyCar crown, and his first since his rookie year of 2003.
The race will be televised by ABC-TV at 3:30 p.m. E.T. Sunday afternoon.
