FIVE EX-CHAMP CAR DRIVERS PASS INDY 500 ROOKIE ORIENTATION

Led by Will Power, winner of the Champ Car finale at the 34th Annual Toyota Grand Pirx of Long Beach, five ex-Champ Car pilots passed their rookie test for the May 25 Indy 500.

Power, who also took the honor of being first on the track on Opening Day for the 92nd annual racing classic, was quickest of the 13 total rookies with a fast lap of 220.694 mph.

All Indy 500 rookies must pass a four-phase orientation program, demonstrating consistent car control for 10 laps each at four increasing levels of speed.

Power, Graham Rahal, Oriol Servia, E. J. Viso and Justin Wilson passed all four phases. Enrique Bernolid passed three phases and may complete the fourth at any point later in the month.

Mario Moraes completed three laps late in the day on Sunday, while Mario Dominguez did not take the track. They both must complete the first three phases of the rookie orientation today (Monday) to be eligible to compete in the race.

"We were first in and last out," said a happy Power, wheeling the #8 Aussie Vineyaqrds-Team Australia entry from KV Racing Technology. "It was a good day. When I first went out I thought, 'How in the hell do you go flat out here?' But at the end it was pretty solid."
