Australia's Will Power outdragged polesitter Justin Wilson from the standing start, then went on to lead 81 of 83 to win the Champ Car finale at the 34th Annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.
It was the third career Champ Car win for Power, driving the #8 KV Racing Technology/Aussie Vineyards/Team Australia entry. He finished 5.094 seconds ahead of rookie runner-up Frank Montagny in the #7 INDECK Forsythe Pettit Racing car.
Mario Dominguez (#96 Pacific Coast Motorsports) was third, followed by rookie Enrique Bernoldi (#36 Conquest Racing/Opes Prime/Sangari) and Oriol Servia (#6 KV Racing Technology/Plantronics/HP).
Wilson, one of the pre-race favorites, pulled off-course on lap 12 with mechanical problems, finishing 19th. Another of the pre-race favorites, Graham Rahal, spun on lap 47 while running 4th, then spun again in the late laps, ultimately finishing 13th.
Four-time Long Beach winner Paul Tracy clipped a wall on the 4th lap and pitted for a new tire. He motored gamely back to finish 11th, one spot behind the 1996 race winner, Jimmy Vasser (#12 KV Racing Teachnology/Plantronics/HP) who came out of retirement for one last run at The Beach.
